Torie Zalben is a multimedia photographer and filmmaker
Torie Zalben is a multimedia photographer and filmmaker known for her work depicting dream-like characters in abstract settings. Her use of combining genres of fantasy with images of phosphorescent illuminations submerged in water are inspired by filmmaker Maya Deren’s love for the element and metaphor of water and in-camera techniques.
Zalben invites varied perspectives and subjective understandings as a means of interpreting her work. Inspiration from her study of film and predilections for dream worlds and meditative states synthesize her cosmology as an artist. Born in Los Angeles, CA she attended Loyola Marymount University and received her BA in 2011, and her MA from New York University in 2015.
Zalben has been exhibiting her work since 2011 and today is in the permanent collection of NYU’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study. She sits on the Dean’s Council of NYU’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study, an advisory board member of the David Lynch Foundation in Los Angeles, a founding member of the ICA LA Next Gen. board and host-committee member for Project Angel Food. She has exhibited with Gallatin Galleries, Vector Gallery, iii Points Festival, UNICEF Next Gen, Vox Populi, CalArts Immersion Group, Vortex Immersion Media, Open Source Gallery, Gowanus Ballroom, Bodii Actualized, and SmashboxStudios.
